Maipokhari ramsar site is one of the most beautiful wetlands of midland mountain with rich biodiversity, wilderness and tranquility. About 18 km to the north of Ilam bazaar, the star shaped lake, Maipokhari has nine corners, which is believed to be paying tribute to different Gods. Thus, it is a sacred place for Hindus, Buddhists and Kirats. Surrounded by greenery, the lake is best known for boating and fishing.
According to Hindu’s religious book ‘Mahabharata’, the Pandav brothers roamed in Baraha Chhetra , Arjundhara and reached Maipokhari during their tenure of staying in the jungle.
Other major attractions in Maipokhari are satyadhuni ashram, nirmal mai ashram, tashi choling monastery, shiva temple, saraswati temple and bhagwati temple. During Thulo Ekadashi, large fairs are organized in this area.
